WEBCAM August 2020
Post webcam observations for August here.  Observations should start with a date and ‘jst’ time (Japan Standard Time) and camera(s).  Describe as best as possible what you see.  Contribute data such as weather conditions, work activities, TEPCO or local news reports, radiation readings, earthquake activity, or any information that documents events occurring at Daiichi.  Comments and analysis welcome.  Help keep an eye on TEPCO's disaster site.

Fukushima’s radioactive water problem
Posted on May 22, 2020 by beyondnuclearinternational
Water should be stored at nuclear site, not dumped in the Pacific
By Linda Pentz Gunter

Quote:We are republishing this story this week, as the Japanese government is now threatening the imminent dumping of the radiologically contaminated water, stored at the Fukushima nuclear site, into the Pacific Ocean. The article below provides the background on this issue and the alternative choices. Our Japanese activist friends are urging us all to sign onto their petitions — there is one for groups to sign and one for individuals — asking the Japanese government not to dump 1.2 million cubic meters of radioactive water into the ocean. Japan civil society groups and Fukushima fishing unions are strongly opposed to this needless ocean discharge.

Slow Down on Dumping Contaminated Water From Tsunami-Crippled Fukushima Nuclear Plant, Oceanographer Says
By Ron Brackett   August 07 2020 12:25 PM EDT   weather.com
Quote:The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., has said more than 70% of the tanks would need secondary treatment to reduce concentrations below that required by law for their release, the article said.

The contaminated water, now about 1.3 million tons, is pumped into storage tanks at the nuclear plant. TEPCO has estimated it will run out of room in 2022, according to the Japan Times.

To fully understand the consequences of releasing the tank water, scientists must know what radioactive isotopes remain in the tanks after secondary treatment. Buesseler said that list has to go beyond the nine isotopes currently reported because the water could include others, including plutonium.

Buesseler said independent verification of testing after secondary treatment should be part of the solution, along with looking at other storage options.

"Any option that involves ocean releases would need independent groups keeping track of all of the potential contaminants in seawater, the seafloor and marine life. The health of the ocean — and the livelihoods of countless people — rely on this being done right," Buesseler said.

Let's not forget old normals.  Fuku really dodged the news this year, no Olympic Games and Covid madness took over.  Fuku's tanks of radioactive water are still a problem.

On the cameras I've seen a few crane movements during the month, not very busy.  Last week at night it looked like some activity at Unit 3.  Some lights were on but covered over by cranes and rains.  I still see spark bursts sometimes.
