Skibotn, Svanhovd and Kajaani are three of the locations in northern Europe where the radioactive isotope of unknown origin are measured.

The levels were very low, ranging from 0,7 to 1,6 micro-becquerel per cubic meter air, STUK says in a news release. From where the radioactivity is coming is still unknown. Radioactive iodine-131 has a half-life of only eight days so the measurements are proof of a rather recent release. The source could be a nuclear reactor, a facility producing isotopes for medical purposes or by releases from a nuclear weapons related test.

Norway’s Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) on Monday confirms detection of radioactive iodine also at several of the country’s air-measurement stations.

Bredo Møller at NRPA’s Emergency Preparedness Unit at Svanhovd, near Norway’s border to Russia in the north, says to the Barents Observer that the levels detected are «very small concentrations of radioactive iodine.» He says the the levels at the Norwegian stations were between 0,2 to 0,5 micro-becquerel per cubic meter.

The iodine were detected in the second week of January at Ørland [northwest of Trondheim], then in Skibotn in Troms the week after. Last week of January, the isotope was measured outside Oslo, while the two air-filters at Svanhovd and Viksjøfjell on Norway’s border to Russia in the north detected the radioactivity last week, between February 5 to 12. According to STUK, the radioactivity was also found in air-filters in Estonia.

The levels measured raise no health concerns.

Too many ongoing detections of radio-iodine with no source identified.  People living between the unknown source and the detecting stations might have some health concerns if they were exposed to radio-iodine.

In Norway and Finland, radioactive isotopes were discovered at monitoring stations in January and March last year, as well as in January and February this year. The first cloud of radioactivity last year was first detected at Svanhovd air filter station on Norway’s border to Russia in the north, but spread over most of Europe south to France and Spain over the following two weeks.

"Nobody has anything like this," Putin said simultaneously as a video animation was displayed on big screens. Two of the screened weapons Putin presented are new nuclear-powered delivery systems.

"The releases of radioactivity could be quite high directly at the site where the nuclear-powered cruise-missile is tested, which could lead to potential health concerns for the local population," Nils Bøhmer says.

Vital1, that very well may be it.  New nuclear-powered delivery systems to deliver nuclear weapons.  I would not want to be part of the launch crew if the thing spews radiation at take-off.  America built a missile defense system and the Russians develop a system to defeat it.  What will another cold war bring us?   To think we were ready to blame a peaceful atom on the rising radiation threats to life.  I guess I would ask if there was an isotope signature we could use to detect further tests.  It's still concerning that people between the source and the detecting stations are getting fresh radio-iodine exposures.  The Southern Hemisphere is looking safer every day.

Thanks, Code, for linking MVB's latest post.  His analysis  of radiation detections that the news media glossed over provides a glimpse of our new nuclear environment.  No warning needed for supposed safe radiation.  Besides the unknowns, we have many known Spring 2018 nuclear events to choose from.  

Pounding an opening thru R2's concrete walls, the most radioactive of Daiichi's meltdowns.  

Moving spent fuel from the common pool (CSFP) into casks to make room for R3's spent fuel load.

Strong EQ's; seismic waves disturbing the melts and fuel pools.  

NK's nuclear mountain collapse.  China mentioned detections from that testing.  

Perhaps they all combined to send a cloud around the Northern Hemisphere.   Diluting the radioactive spew too fast may be detectable.  So thick it seems to be spilling into the Southern Hemisphere since Fukushima, from Vital1's reported steady background increases.  We may never know for sure the sources but its not something we want in our air.
