SMR's a deadly fantasy
#1
SMR's;  nothing new, nothing good

Small modular reactors are being promoted as new, safe, clean and cheap solutions to several of humanities problems. In reality small reactors are already in use and have been in existence since the beginning of the nuclear industry and have all the same drawbacks and dangers as larger reactors.

History shows the inevitable outcome of making small nuclear reactors;  a proliferation of nuclear weapon material,  accidents, criminal involvement,  bad economics and pollution of the environment with super toxins

Author Jim Green deconstructs the fantasies of SMRs promulgated by the nuclear business interests

ARTICLE ABSTRACT: In this article, we argue that scientists and technologists associated with the nuclear industry are building support for small modular reactors (SMRs) by advancing five rhetorical visions imbued with elements of fantasy that cater to various social expectations. The five visions are as follows: a vision of risk-free energy would eliminate catastrophic accidents and meltdowns. A vision of indigenous self-energization would see SMRs empowering remote communities and developing economies. A vision of water security would see SMR-powered desalination plants satisfying the world?s water needs. A vision of environmental nirvana would see SMRs providing waste-free and carbon-free electricity to preserve the earth?s biosphere. A vision of space exploration would see SMRs assisting in the colonization of the moon, Mars, and possibly other worlds. These visions help create a symbolic convergence among promoters, serving to attract political and financial support, and erasing previous nuclear failures from public discourse. Moreover, underlying these visions is a technological utopian ideal world where SMRs would generate plentiful energy of multiple kinds (electricity and heat), offering the necessary means for a life of comfort for all people by meeting various needs (lighting, temperature control, drinking water, and provision of scarce minerals) and without any environmental externalities or cause for concern about accidents.

SMR's,   (Small modular nuclear reactors)  have the same danger as larger reactors.  This was dramatically revealed when a SMR  exploded Aug. 8 off the coast of the northern Russian town of Nenoska, killing seven Russians on a barge in the White Sea as they were overseeing the recovery of a sunken Skyfall.
“The explosion was caused by the Skyfall experiencing a criticality accident, an uncontrolled nuclear reaction that released a burst of radiation..."
The unexpected, violent accident spread an undisclosed amount of nuclear fallout and endangered the lives of medical personnel. The Russian government covered up the event.  It is no different in other countries.

Nuclear is political.  There is no reason the U.S., Russia and other countries cant be nearly 100% renewable like Iceland (100 percent), Paraguay (100), Costa Rica (99), Norway (98.5), Austria (80), Brazil (75), and Denmark (69.4)

The military/industrial/corporate/government complex does not want to lose income on deadly energy production.  They control the media, which is why the public is generally not aware of these countries running almost totally on renewable

A recent study by Stanford University researchers predicted that the world could be powered entirely by renewable energy in just 20 to 40 years from now.

El Hierro, the most remote of Spain's Canary Islands, is now billing itself as the world's first energy self-sufficient island that has never been hooked up to a power grid.
