Quote:Akademic Lomonosov has two KLT-40S reactors on board, that have a special security system allowing them shut down if necessary, even if the crew were absent or the power supply down.

The reactors are capable of producing up to 70 megawatts of electricity and 50 gigacalories-an-hour of heat energy. The 140-meter long vessel itself was designed to meet high safety standards, ensuring that any kind of collision, including with another ship or with a rock, or a natural disaster, would not damage the reactors. The floating power plant's operational lifespan is 40 years.

The ship, Akademik Lomonosov, is headed far away from Moscow to the small far-eastern port of Pevek, which sits on the Arctic coast of Chukotka. That will place it very close to the coast of Alaska.  Any nuclear releases are just upwind of that remote part of the United States.

Russia's pioneering floating nuclear power plant begins delivering electricity to remote Arctic region

Quote:The world's first floating nuclear power plant (FNPP), the Akademik Lomonosov, began supplying electricity on Thursday to a remote town in the far eastern region of Chukotka, Russia's nuclear agency Rosatom has announced.

The power plant's generators were launched after being synchronized with the connected electric grid on shore.

An additional reactor is in the works for the Russian region, Chukotka.

Quote:The second floating nuclear power station will use a different type, RITM-200M, which produces more power and requires less space, which means the ship carrying them can be made smaller and thus easier to tow and dock without compromising safety.

As if towing and docking are my only safety concerns.
