Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant

In 2017, federal regulators from the U.S. Department of Energy testing the neighborhood around a 20th century uranium plant in Pike County, Ohio, made a startling discovery in the air near a middle school attended by hundreds of local children — traces of neptunium-237, an extremely radioactive particle, typically a by-product from nuclear reactors.

But what happened next was even more incredible. Instead of issuing a public alert that might have led to more testing and a possible closure of the Zahn’s Corner Middle School, located in an economically depressed region of southern Ohio, the U.S. government said absolutely nothing.

U.S. Energy Secretary Tours American Centrifuge Plant - 10.06.2017

On September 29, 2017, U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry toured the American Centrifuge Plant facilities in Piketon, Ohio, to learn about Centrus’ demonstration of advanced U.S. uranium enrichment technology at the site and the site’s potential to host a plant for national security purposes.

Accompanying Perry were U.S. Senator Rob Portman, U.S Representatives Bill Johnson and Brad Wenstrup, along with Centrus President and CEO Dan Poneman and Vice President of Field Operations Larry Cutlip.

During the tour, Perry saw the recently decommissioned Demonstration Cascade, which successfully operated for three years to prove the readiness of Centrus’ AC100 centrifuge machine. The site could be utilized in the future to reestablish America’s domestic uranium enrichment capability for national security and other purposes

We always ask what have we done because we don't know what we are doing.

Hi Jebus, there had been a brief discussion about this in the gov. corruption thread. Maybe could be moved here? The school can't find a third party contractor to do sampling... hmmm wonder why.

Hello rthsmth, good to hear from you. I hope all the ENE crew keeps posting the current state of affairs.

Maybe Horse can bring that convo over. It fits under the PGDP. A long history of contamination there.

The neptunium-237 was caught in an air sample. That seems current enough for me.

Neptunium-237, an Alpha emitter. Sampled in the air. It is now an internal Alpha emitter for everything that breathes..

From wiki

"The most stable isotope of neptunium, neptunium-237, is a by-product of nuclear reactors and plutonium production. It, and the isotope neptunium-239, are also found in trace amounts in uranium ores due to neutron capture reactions and beta decay."

So it's present in trace amounts in Uranium. Sure, it's just from years before. We didn't know. It's safe now.

From above - "During the tour, Perry saw the recently decommissioned Demonstration Cascade, which successfully operated for three years to prove the readiness of Centrus’ AC100 centrifuge machine"

shhh, don't tell the children...
We always ask what have we done because we don't know what we are doing.

rthsmth: "Hi Jebus, there had been a brief discussion about this in the gov. corruption thread."

Looks like it's now Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant Thread. Winner!

"There's no place like home."

Lockheed Martin False Payment Claims-Failure to ID and Report Haz Waste at Nuclear Enrichment Site (Paducah, Kentucky); $5 Million Civil Suit Settlement Means Remain “Allegations”, But Criminal Suits; Personal Injury; Property Damage Suits, Etc., May Still Be Brought

...Settled out of court.

...Last weekend, DOE Secretary Rick Perry sent “a world class team of certified health physicists” to do follow-up sampling.

Besides the DOE, other defendants include its contractors – Centrus Energy Corporation; United States Enrichment Corporation; Uranium Disposition Services, LLC; BWXT Conversion Services, LLC; Mid-America Conversion Services, LLC; Bechtel Jacobs Company, LLC; Lata/Parallax Portsmouth, LLC; and Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth, LLC.

The plaintiffs seek to represent the following individuals, including all property owners within a seven-mile radius of the Portsmouth Site; all residents and former residents with more than one year of residence, also within a seven-mile radius; and all current and former students at Zahn’s Corner Middle School from 1993 to the present, as well as their parents.

The plaintiffs are asking the U.S. District Court to certify the class; award damages for loss of use and enjoyment of their property; and punitive damages. They are also asking for remediation of their property; a medical surveillance and medical monitoring program; and other procedures to settle the case.
Sen. Brown sounds off on Piketon radiation situation

Fears of radiological contamination in and around Pike County have one of Ohio’s elected leaders taking action.

Brown said Scioto Valley Local Schools District leaders made the right move in closing the Zahn’s Corner Middle School in May.

U.S. Department of Energy

“The Department is committed to the health and safety of the Piketon community. All previous data has indicated that there is no threat to the public’s safety. In light of the recent concerns of the community surrounding the closure of Zahn’s Corner Middle School, Secretary Perry sent a technical team from the world class National Labs to Piketon to take a comprehensive sampling of the school. That data is now under evaluation and will be released soon.”

We always ask what have we done because we don't know what we are doing.

This Week’s Featured Interviews:

Radioactive contamination found at Ohio School – where is it from and what does it mean? Interview with Vina Colley; she is, in her own words, “a Whistleblower, a sick worker from the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion plant in Piketon, Ohio.” Vina is a Co-Founder of National Nuclear Workers for Justice (NNWJ) and Portsmouth/Piketon Resident for Environmental Safety and Security, or (PRESS). For more than 30 years, she has pushed the government to take responsibility for the radiological contamination that came from the Uranium Enrichment site, and execute The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA), which was enacted in October 2000 to compensate workers for their health issues caused by working within DOE’s nuclear facilities. She provides history and insights into the radiation contamination at the Zahn’s Corner Middle School in Piketon, Ohio – only two miles from the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion plant.
BREAKING: Energy Secretary Rick Perry orders the last 4+ years of radiation monitoring around Portsmouth site to be released to the public.
Kevin Kamps, nuclear waste watchdog for Beyond Nuclear, spoke at the May 13, 2019 Congressional Briefing on Nuclear Waste that was held in Washington, DC. In this excerpt from his presentation, he speaks against the proposed Consolidated “Interim” Storage site in New Mexico.

Environmental group says new nuclear power plant too pricey for Utah's municipal utilities

...The intent is for the municipal power system to purchase all 12 modular reactors at the plant being built by an Oregon-based company, NuScale Power, system spokesman LaVarr Webb said.

The power generated would be used by the 46 members, mostly municipalities, in Utah and other states, Webb said, and would sold to other users including the federal government for use by the Idaho National Laboratory and the Department of Energy...

The study, by Salt Lake City-based Energy Strategies, found power produced by the small modular nuclear reactors to be built in Idaho would cost more than $66 per megawatt hour, compared to as low as just over $38 for wind and solar power.
A statement issued by the municipal power system disputed numbers in the study, including the cost of producing power by what's being called the Carbon Free Power Project, saying it is now at $55 and may drop further.
...The statement from the municipal power system said the study authors should have consulted with them and that local government officials "have the expertise and sophistication needed to make informed decisions about the project."

One. More. Time.
HHD,  more of your comment on the links would be welcome.   The context should be restated frequently, IMHO, even though it may seem redundant to you.

I always appreciate your work.   I was just wondering if you have more on the mafia that dumped nuke waste all over Italy and parts of Africa

Sorry 'bout that, Code. Trying to be more neutral in my comments. Seems when I remove the bias, there's a blank page. ?

No idea about the mafia and Italy or Africa. Do they have a more specific title?

Carlsbad City Council Approves Holtec Resolution for Waste Storage

The "resolution" is not law, just a concerted effort to make it appear to the public that it's a done deal so they won't fight it.

The "jobs" they promise to the area? They don't mention the number, but it's about 100.

There are many other other facets to this stone.
'Ndrangheta    Itsa quita story.    A microcosm of our human civilization...a study of the sociological roots of nukism.

HHD,  you're a commando of few words.  Thats admirable.   I have a deal;   I will try to talk less if you talk more, that way the universe wont spin out due to unbalance

Maybe the world needs your bias.   Everybody's got one

Dangerous Radioactive Waste Storage in Texas Proposed by J.F. Lehman & France – US NRC Hearing

Some of the nation's richest investors are betting they see profit where no one else does: tearing down America's aging nuclear reactors.

Among them is one of the most recognized names from the Reagan administration, former Secretary of the Navy John Lehman.

Lehman's plans are shrouded in secrecy. The hedge fund that bears his name does not disclose basic information about its finances.

But an examination of deals made by the hedge fund since 2017 to raise money and acquire firms makes it clear the company sees a pot of gold for the taking -- some $60 billion accumulating in trust funds owned by nuclear power plants -- all of it bankrolled by ratepayers.

When poison is profitable, the earth will be poisoned.    They dont 'make money',  the public pays for it all, getting poorer and losing valuable time and energy to support poison profitters.

Judge slaps down Norcross subpoenas
By RYAN HUTCHINS 07/23/2019 07:20 AM EDT
Presented by the New Jersey Education Association
Good Tuesday morning. Well, that didn’t take long: Superior Court Judge Mary Jacobson just told George Norcross he couldn’t subpoena communications between Gov. Phil Murphy’s staffers and outside advisers. No subpoena for you!

Norcross’ lawyers had issued a series of document demands last week as part of the lawsuit challenging Murphy’s tax incentive task force. They wanted to know about the so-called “inside/outside” calls between aides and consultants under the theory that the origins of the task force were political.

Problem was, Jacobson had already put a hold on discovery in the case. Murphy lawyer Theodore Wells Jr. called the subpoenas a “blatant violation” of the order. Jacobson apparently agreed. Ted Sherman has the story here.

STARTING TO SEE A PATTERN HERE —"Nuclear business in NJ tax break investigation faces claims it lied to federal regulators," by The Record's Dustin Racioppi: “Two weeks after New Jersey froze its $260 million tax break citing a problematic ‘oversight’ on its incentive application, a top official in New Mexico accused Holtec International of making ‘egregious’ and ‘patently untrue’ statements in its plans to build a nuclear waste storage facility there. Holtec, a nuclear parts company now based in Camden, misled federal regulators and the public by saying the site in New Mexico is under its control and overstated its support for building on one of the world's most active oil and gas fields, according to that state’s public lands commissioner, Stephanie Garcia Richard. The claim that it made misleading statements to public officials is not a first for Holtec, whose $260 million award is the second-largest in New Jersey history.”

Pilgrim Watch files third contention against sale of Plymouth nuke

PLYMOUTH - A local nuclear watchdog group has filed a third contention against the proposed sale of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station by Entergy Inc. to Holtec International. Pilgrim Watch filed motions with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission urging the federal agency to not approve the sale until it has determined that the purchaser is “trustworthy, reliable and of good character.”

This petition to intervene and hearing request urge the NRC to do a complete background check on Holtec, which is facing numerous allegations of misconduct in previous dealings related to nuclear projects.

Earlier this month, a published report cited the corporation did not disclose it had been temporarily banned from doing business with the Tennessee Valley Authority. In addition, Holtec International President and CEO Krishna Singh was questioned as part of a criminal investigation, according to Politico New Jersey.

“They have a history of not being honest and misrepresenting the truth,” said Mary Lampert, director of Pilgrim Watch. “It goes on and on. It’s not our job to prove the lies and cheating. NRC – do your job!”

This is the third contention, or legal claim, filed by the group, which has also filed an amendment to one of the previous motions. The attorney general of Massachusetts has filed two contentions regarding the proposed sale. The claims deal with conditions of the sale and argue that assurances are needed that the nuclear decommissioning fund of $1.04 billion will be sufficient to handle the clean up at the site.

Health(death)physicists save the day.....whew it was a close one eh?

"Those samples did not indicate the presence of any manmade isotopes such as neptunium, plutonium and americium," the official said. Nor did it test positive for enriched uranium, the official said, adding "all that's there is what God created when the planet formed."

A surprise admission by a top federal administrator is raising some shocking new questions about how much that kids going to a nearby middle school and neighbors of a southern Ohio uranium-processing plant have been exposed to radioactive pollution during recycling efforts there since the start of the new millennium.

Paul Dabbar, undersecretary of science for the U.S, Department of Energy — which runs the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant that produced uranium for nuclear bombs throughout the Cold War — stunned local officials in Pike County with a letter admitting that DOE underreported contamination in the community near the site from 2001 until 2017.
