Crowd Sourced Contamination Map, Southern Hemisphere September 2018 Background Report
#1
JAPAN

19th September 2018 - Published funds by radioactive contamination net donation investigated by 4,000 citizens

Extracts:

After the accident, citizen activities to measure radioactivity contained in food etc. independently started in various places. In September 2012, groups in various places brought measurement results to launch a data site, which began to be released in January 2001. Starting in October 2002, activities to map the situation of radioactive cesium deposited in soil in eastern Japan also started. Approximately 4000 people participated by spring this year and about 3,400 soils gathered from Aomori Prefecture to Shizuoka prefecture.

Based on the measured data on cesium concentration, the concentration transition from the time of accident occurrence to 100 years later is converted into a map and it is mapped to each map Also add a commentary to record. In addition, articles that analyzed measurement results of rice, wild vegetables, mushrooms, etc., and columns of evacuees from Fukushima prefecture are included. All color A4 size, planned to exceed 170 pages. We plan to issue 2000 volumes.

Comment: The Japanese Google translation is not the best, hence some date anomalies. The map below shows the crowd sourced detected contamination as of 2018,  plus it shows what they project it to be in the future, taking into account Cesium-137 thirty year half life. The map shows that Tokyo and surrounds got significantly dosed.

Map: (The chart legend top left, represents the soil concentration of cesium-137 in Becquerel per kilogram.)

Southern Hemisphere September 2018 Background Level Report

Station location

This short animation of Northern and Southern Hemisphere air circulation, shows why we can get detections so far south.

The reference monitoring station's GammaScout Geiger counter died on the 12th September 2018, RIP.  The last full day average it recorded was on the 11th September 2018. The GammaScout was used as a reference up until now, because all the data recorded here prior to Fukushima was using a GammaScout.

Will be trialling different equipment for the local monitoring station, a SBT-10 pancake, using Theremino Geiger counter software. I worked out how to transfer the logged data for this new setup into the charts I created for the GammaScout logged data. Because this is completely different monitoring equipment, the long term data reference will not be as accurate.

September's 2018 month average is based on the 29 days of collected data.

September average background here tends to vary a lot from year to year. September marks the seasonal change from winter to spring and wind direction at this location during this seasonal change can swing wildly between tropical to southerlies.  The more tropical wind we get for September, the higher the background, the more Southerly, the lower the background.

Caloundra September month average, year comparisons.

2018    14% above pre-Fukushima average
2017    27% above pre-Fukushima average
2016    12% above pre-Fukushima average
2015     5% above pre-Fukushima average
2014     6% above pre-Fukushima average
2013    15% above pre-Fukushima average
2012    13% above pre-Fukushima average

Cairns September Report - A slight increase around the middle of the month, but otherwise close to average. The Cairns monitoring station has two GammaScout Geiger counters.

To clarify the Japanese report in my post above, as the Google translation is pretty poor.

Minnano Data Site is a website where you can look up soil and food data, measured by citizens radiation measuring stations, around Japan. This citizen financed web site has extensive lists of food and soil reports that can be viewed by the public. Automatic foreign language translation is available at the web site.

To raise funds they have compiled a 170 page color book based on this data. It is only available in Japanese at present. The book includes a map showing how extensive radioactive Cesium soil contamination is across Japan, as of 2018. Using the fact that Cesium-137 has a thirty year half life, they have also included maps presenting what they expect the contamination to be like in thirty, and one hundred years, after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

Besides the map screen shot shown above, they also provide this interactive Japanese soil contamination  map at their site.
