WEBCAM August 2018
#1
Post webcam observations for August here.  Observations should start with a date and ‘jst’ time (Japan Standard Time) and camera(s).  Describe as best as possible what you see.  Contribute data such as weather conditions, work activities, TEPCO or local news reports, radiation readings, earthquake activity, or any information that documents events occurring at Daiichi.  Comments and analysis welcome.  Help keep an eye on TEPCO's disaster site.

08-01 Look what comes out of the fog on cam4.  Looks like another crane is being assembled.  Workers sited guiding a cable reel into place.  Workers wearing protective suits and face masks.  They should be getting hazard pay.  The clearing fog was punctuated by puffs of diesel smoke.  In the evening I saw a red light blinking.  It came into view three times, each lasting a few minutes.

Unusually great clarity on those screenshots. I wonder if they installed a new camera or lens.

The workers in the foreground show up real well, much clearer than the buildings in the background.  The lens have been cleaned by recent rains.  The cameras are good quality but Tepco limits the feeds we get to see.
Nuckelchen showed what Tepco sees vs. what we get.  http://caferadlab.com/thread-323.html
TBG showed how much the camera is zoomed.  http://caferadlab.com/thread-85.html
I don't know that they've ever replaced the cameras.

08-03 Fuku is not all cleaned up yet.  Looks busy at both ends of the plant.

08-05 There were a couple minor quakes in Japan. I checked cam4 for the two 4.7's but didn't see the cam shaking.  I've seen wind gusts shake the cam a bit to fake me out.  EQ's greater than 5 have shaken the cams, jerking the view up and down.  Maybe they weren't close enough this time.

08-05 pm I watched an electrical storm light up the sky to the south.  Could be the approaching typhoon Shanshan.  The lightning flashed on cam1 for about a half hour putting on a nice show.  Too many to show, I'll pick some of the bright ones out and display the thumbnail pics.

08-07 Cam4 shows workers assembling a new crane.

Cam1 showed different pieces being placed on the west side of r1.  They worked late into the day, maybe trying to get work done before the storm comes.  Camera views showing lots of rain.

08-08 Its raining hard on cam4.  Namie is pretty close.  This 4.7 EQ starts shaking the camera at about 18:00.  Most of the quakes take about a minute after the UTC time reported.  Hard to tell wind shake from quaking.  Hard jerking lasts only seconds.

Quote:Are these earthquakes related to the increased (visible) emissions at Fukushima over the last couple of weeks or are weather conditions primarily predictive of visibility?

Earthqukes always seem to add to emissions.  Cracking open reactor 2 put more radionuclides into the air around the plant.  It is that time of year for storms, but Daiichi always has its own weather.
