WEBCAM March 2018
#1
Post webcam observations for March here.  Observations should start with a date and ‘jst’ time (Japan Standard Time) and camera(s).  Describe as best as possible what you see.  Contribute data such as weather conditions, work activities, TEPCO or local news reports, radiation readings, earthquake activity, or any information that documents events occurring at Daiichi.  Comments and analysis welcome.  Help keep an eye on TEPCO's disaster site.

Two projects that were visible on cam4 concluded last month; the completion of the r3 roof cover and the crane teardown in the foreground of cam4.  Since the 5.6 EQ at the end of last month I've noticed that cam4 shakes more in the wind looking like frequent little 4.x EQ's.  If nothing else the EQ has loosened cam4's mounting.  I noticed that no press releases came out after the quake reassuring us that Daiichi was not further damaged.  Yesterday was a heavy rain that washed the camera lens.  A small smudge on the lens of cam1 that I had noticed for the last couple weeks in the sky above r1 is gone; washed clean.  The remote crane on cam1 moves around some.  Cam4 still shows a crane pulley in the foreground sometimes but no loads come up high enough to see what's being moved.  Cam4 really rocks in the wind now.   March starts out with the end of the work week so I don't expect to see too much industrial activity for the next couple days.

Now 2018 03 04      00 :46 : 23 JST  Not a blink
And then.
2018-03-03-03 33 JST Hey Horse, so glad your links at the top of this Mars page work. Mine gave off a 404.
R #3 looks even more ominous at night and by day too with the round roof cover.
Just think I saw the white blinking light appear again bottom of the left tower just above the CSFP common spent fuel pool. Not blinking much. As you said then, might well be some tarp in the wind..

Thanks a lot for your acute description of what we got from Cam 1 and 4.

Hi Felibi, the links to the tepcams do work but most of the time it takes me a couple tries to get the full page to load.  My oldest computer always takes three tries.  I saw the left tower light the last couple nights.  I'm thinking it might be the metal at the top of one of the smaller cranes reflecting the site lights.  The other cam, cam1, shows small cranes parked by that vent tower.  While I was typing this post up I glanced up at cam4 and saw a small spark by the vent tower, now I have a picture for this post.  The site lights just went off and the lights on the vent tower went out too; whatever the light is, it's just reflected light.

I see that Organic Slant is still watching the tepcams too.  A couple of videos have featured sparks.  With all that Tepco has been able to hide, I thought it was interesting that gamma radiation was still high enough on site to affect the tepcams and put on spark shows for us.

I noticed this when I tried going to ENENews today. ICANN can't even get a response from ENENews admin.

03-07 Not much to report, work started in the form of cranes moving but not much else changing in the views.  Saw rain and small webs again the night before.  Sorry for the lack of updates but high winds in my area have knocked out my internet service for the last two days; recording has been hit and miss.  I see that ENENews is still down.  I read noise that Tepco still wants to dump tritium water into the ocean; the ice wall has reduced the flow but tanks are full.  I think the fishermen are the only thing stopping Tepco from dumping.  While the tritium may not be that harmful to humans (arguably) it is devastating to aquatic life.  In the case of Daiichi, no news is still bad news.

This evening in Fuk. Very blurry The difference between Webcam 1 still rather clear and webcam 4, definitely blurry, misty whatever. Duh
Trying to send some screenshots. Hope they'correspond to the pixel page thingy.
Will try with one first. If it works, I'll post the others. Take care all
2018 3 8 17 30 JST screenshots : Too big and fails... Just go and watch the lousy weather.
Bye all and take care all. We can do nothing about radioactivity release but we can warn our sisters and brothers about Fuk. and the nuclear village.
.....

Lights on in the middle right of the picture on Webcam 4. Still misty there

Wish there was a way for you to resize your screenshots to 700x pixels. There are some things we can do -

Campaign targeting CTBTO to make their data more available, more transparent
Boycott Japanese products, especially anything related to energy (TEPCO) and produce (farm & ocean foods)
Lobby US to stop importing Japanese products from affected areas (that includes autos, lumber, foods, drinks)

I think we already do a pretty decent job of warning people.

Hi Felibi, lots of rain at Daiichi.  Saw a couple webs early on but the rain washes the lens and the webs fade out.  The extra light on the vent tower has been blinking again.  Still don't know exactly what's causing that light.  Always good to see contributions and observations even without pictures.

If you are still using a full screen capture you will have to use MS Paint to crop the portion of the capture you want and save it as a jpeg to upload here.  Cropping the picture to just the camera feed will make it small enough.  Have you tried cropping your full screen capture?

1. Grab a full screen capture.
2. Import into MS Paint.
3. Click on Select and choose Rectangular selection.
4. Use the cursor to select the portion you want, the camera feed.
5. Click on Crop.  Only the rectangular selection remains.
6. Save as a jpeg and name the cropped image.
7. At CRL do a New reply or select Full Edit.
8. At the bottom where it says Attachments, choose Browse and find the cropped image you saved.  By default MS Paint saves to your Pictures folder.
9. Click on Add Attachment.
10. Click in the edit window where you want the picture, then click on the Insert button by the attachment.

The edit window should now have an entry with some number like:

[attachment=1798]

A Preview Post will show the picture.  When you're ready Post Reply.

03-10 pm  I noticed several bright sparks.  Thought I had a cam4 spark very close in time to a cam1 spark.  When I looked for it I found missing time in the recording and no cam4 spark.  Cam4 usually records each second like cam1 but sometimes cam4 gets a bit jerky and loses a couple seconds in the recording.  It might be the computer I record with but later in that recording each second was there.  Makes finding those cam4 sparks that much more difficult.  On cam4, Felibi's vent tower light was on solid all night.

Here's a cam1 spark report for a little over an hour and a half.

03-11  Not so many sparks tonight.  Did see two planes flyby.  Both coming from the north heading south.  Caught the first plane on cam4 then followed it on cam1.  I wasn't watching too closely and didn't notice the 2nd plane till I went thru the cam1 recording.

There was a spark while the second plane flew by.  The spark is on the vent tower, the plane wasn't flashing navigation lights but it shows as a dim light to the right of the spark.

I wonder how far out the over-flight no-go-zone is around Fukushima.

I'm not sure how far out the controlled airspace is around Daiichi.  It would be normal though for a diverted flight to hug the coast instead of flying over land and waking the natives.  I think the planes were avoiding bad weather off the coast of Japan.  Big electrical storm on cam1.

Another hour spark count, only because I found another one of those elusive cam4 sparks.

03-14  So many different things I've seen flying by on the tepcams.  This appears to be another small meteor.  I discount it being a bug because it fades out on screen, but it might only be visible flying thru light.  See what you think.

I noticed several reports of other meteors the last few days in Argentina, New Zealand, and over western Washington so I think it's likely I saw one too.

03-16  A crane tool starts work over r1 at 8:00.  Was there most of the day.  Snow clouded up cam4 view for lunch.  Cleared with cloudy grey skies.

Quite the color palette.  Still a lot of pink in the sky, but at least now we can see some orange air pollution tinting the pink.  The reactor 4 extension lights are still the first lights on and the last ones off.  I thought it was interesting that Tepco tried to claim everything was removed from r4's sfp in only one year but r3's sfp would take two years.  That was my guess for how long Tepco was actually taking to remove what they could from r4's sfp.  I wonder if they can really drain that pool yet.

03-20 am  Cam4 had various loads go by, don't know what they were.  Cam1 had its own strange tool showing.

I missed almost a day of recording because of a power outage.  I had them recording again when I noticed cam1 had stopped at 13:20.  When I recycled the browser the cam1 view had dropped a bit to show more of the reactors and less of the sky.
