Pia, would be awesome to have a "news section" where we can drop topical things like the West Lake landfill news

"Storm water collected just outside the West Lake Landfill tests positive for a form of radiation. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that samples collected during heavy rain in April show higher levels of alpha particles than are allowed for drinking water. EPA officials and the landfill owners say the findings do not mean there is a public health risk. There's no evidence to link the storm water runoff to the landfill since low levels of radioactivity can occur naturally."

I sent an email to the CFO for the West lake Landfill Operator as shown
please do similar
cserianni@republicservices.com
Sir, as a specialist in material science and well versed in radiation and heavy metals, I was appalled that the storm water runoff near your West lake landfill that tested high in Alpha radiation (the most dangerous if ingested) were higher than allowable limits for drinking water.
But I was even more appalled that your company choose to play the “you can’t prove it” is from the landfill card, and then played the “radiation is naturally occurring” card. This is a serious matter and needs to be addressed head on. If you folks need more gov funding or whatever, you should have a strong program in place to make it happen.
I was also not happy that your company choose to deflect responsibility by noting—
Russ Knocke, the company's vice president of communications and public affairs, in a statement. "We don't see anything of concern in these results, nor did DNR express any concern when it posted them."
I take particular umbrage with the qualifying language chosen “when it posted them”. So if DNR expressed concern, but just not “when it posted them” then technically you would not by lying. I call those weasel words
I will be instructing Morgan Stanley to begin selling off lots of my holdings in your company. I vote with my feet.

So they let you in anyway, eh AST. I warned Pia you were a rowdy bunch. Trolls haven't lasted long here. Troll Free. Look around, see how its organized and post the information you want to share. Sometimes the trolls have lasted 4 -5 posts. Chuckles.

Stock, its pretty much all news here, we're aggregating nuc news.  There's a great Search function here to find things if you don't know where a topical topic would fit in.  I'm waiting for the time when the View Today's Posts fills up and I have to use View New Posts to keep up with the current conversation.,  What I think you're looking for is a watercooler area or commons to interact.  Maybe someone would like to start a daily, weekly, or a monthly thread in General Discussions.  Probably get popular as we add members posting.  I had to up my game here; not just a commenter like at ENE, I had to put in the work of starting a thread and filling it with content for others to see and/or comment.  You don't have to wait for Pia, any member can start a thread.  Good ENENewsers were adding informative content to admin's aggregated news thread, they can still do that here by adding to member's threads or starting a thread and see what traction it gets.

Yes, welcome AirSepT.  Nice folk here, you might like it.  They tolerate Tech types and appreciate adding more expertise.  It was actually good for me to get away from the toxic environment that ENE has become.  Brush off that toxic troll drivel.  Playing in the dirt just makes me feel dirty.  I have a feeling that the ENE bad troll infestation will only get worse, no matter what the good ENENewsers joust, without some moderation from an admin.  If it gets too quiet here you can always put your armor back on and play word games on ENE.  I'll still post over there if I want to reach out to that audience.  We can build just as good a network here as we once had at ENENews.

Thanks for jumping in for stock while I was away, Horse. Hope everybody does get the hang of using the already established areas for topics ... please browse the categories before starting new sections - if there isn't a topic yet covered,  please do start a new thread or ask me to help if you have difficulty.

I do like the idea of a specific General Discussion area where folks can discuss whatever is on their mind... might call it the Water Cooler...

I suggest calling it Café Lounge. A place to share brilliant pixels of light, maybe find a cup of coffee and someone to chat with.

Regional areas for Café Lounge discussion topics or for where people are? I think, if we do more categorizing it'll be too much, too complicated... esp. for a general hang out. We already have a lot of organization and maybe the Café Lounge should be more "natural" or casual. But, I'm willing to listen to reasoning.

Agree Pia, one lounge should be enough. Let the common folk participate and find a table for their contributions. Some people might be intimidated by the effort required to produce science and research work. It was daunting for me, a lowly techy, to get started here. Casual, yes, so people could toss in their two cents.

Excellent point about the sci-techie aspects... we like to encourage all folks regardless of their background and capacity as long as it's all friendly and collaborative. Shoot, I'm no physicist, though I've been groomed for asking relevant questions and conducting research... so, let us Joust for Good Times!
