31st Anniversary Comments

On this day, 26 April 2017, I think back to when I was living in Santa Rosa, California and Chernobyl blew up. I was a landscaper and property caretaker at the time, so I was outside a lot. Unlike today (post Fukushima) I had no idea that radiation from the Ukraine was wafting over the northern hemisphere, as Japan's radiation has done since 2011.

A radical event in my life occurred July 1986 which took me out of the workforce and brought me home to heal at my mother's home, where I spent my days puttering in the garden, planting herbs and soaking up the sun. Perhaps I was provided some protection from radioactive fallout because I was not fully exposed as I would have been had I continued landscaping. What I do know is that more than a few people I knew in Sonoma County developed cancer and passed away in the decades following Chernobyl, while I did not.

One year after the job related injuries I experienced in 1986, I began a detoxification program and became a vegetarian. This was because I learned in June 1987 that my injuries were caused by repeated exposures to the weed killer, RoundUp. I remained a vegetarian for a year, but continued to eat as much organic produce as I could grow, find, and afford. That includes herbal medicines.

Today, and this past week, news articles and opinion pieces are published discussing Chernobyl, and of course, there continues to be articles and opinions published about Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Fukushima. We don't often see much written about Hanford, WIPP, Rocky Flats, West Lake Landfill, LANL, Three Mile Island, Santa Susana (Rocketdyne), depleted uranium weapons use in the Middle East, Russian and US nuclear waste dumping in our oceans, or the numerous other nuclear related sites and incidents globally that have wreaked havoc on humanity and our commons. But, for some of us, the history of nuclear, weapons or energy, is etched in our memories for one reason or another.

Today I bring you publications as we approach the global decision to ban nuclear weapons in the hope that the cumulative history of nuclear will bring us to the tipping point and we will achieve and ensure a global ban on nuclear weapons.

Nuclear radiation is dangerous and pervasive. It lasts for centuries beyond our own lifetime. And, humanity does not need it.

Let us not forget the Navy sailors exposed to serious levels of TEPCO's Fukushima radiation fallout during operation Tomodachi (more like heavy rad fog that, among other things, entered their drinking water)...
