Ever have one of those bad rad days?  Tired, allergic, feels like a bad flu; worse whenever the jetstream edges closer and Fukushima fallout was in the air.  Industrial toxins in the smog we breathe, gives me a bad headache.  Researching how bad the Fukushima meltdowns were going to impact health led me to another problem the nuclear industry has polluted us with, Fluorides.  Considered a toxic poison not normally found in the environment before the atomic age, Fluoride was a byproduct of nuclear processes and a signature that would identify atomic experimentation.   The toxic waste piled up, a problem that was solved by diluting it into the water we drink.  Radio-Iodine and Fluoride both have negative impacts on the thyroid.  The thyroid is fueled by Iodine, a trace mineral found mostly in seafood.  If the thyroid doesn’t have enough Iodine the lighter halogen elements can be absorbed; radio-Iodine isotopes, Bromine, Chlorine, and Fluorine.  The Japanese diet high in Iodine rich foods like seafood and kelp offers some protection against nuclear and industrial toxins that the American diet doesn’t have.  I grew up in the ‘60’s when food was being supplemented with Iodine to protect our health.  Times have changed; Bromine was substituted as a cheaper alternative in bread, more than enough Fluoride was added to the water to give children grey teeth, more Chlorine was added to control bacteria in our treated water supplies.  Most multi-vitamins contain the trace minerals we need except for Iodine.  I started an Iodine therapy at the beginning of 2016 and I wish I had started years earlier from the health benefits I’ve noticed.  I can’t give any medical or dietary advice except to say do your research and ask your doctor what’s right for you.  In addition, I know of a couple people who reported not tolerating Iodine supplementation so be warned it’s not something for everyone.  For me, I’m glad I tried it; my body likes the added Iodine.  Here’s some research, links, and comments if you’d like to know more.

I've been doing Lugol's 5% for six months. Started with a drop a day for first two months to check for tolerance and ease into the detoxing. Iodine will replace the floride and bromide and release it for removal. Extra sea salt helps removal. Vitamin C is the antidote to too much iodine. I take my vit C 3 hours before or after the iodine. I've slowly increased my dose to about 12 drops a day. I have done therapeutic doses of 36 drops/day to fight infections. I made a nasal rinse adding two drops to a 3 oz saline solution and cleared a chronic sinus infection. Take it real slow at first and good luck.

I've been taking the iodine and other mineral supplements because the food we get is deficient and to detox. Bromine in our bread; fluoride and chlorine in our water. Iodine is protective against toxicity from bromine, fluoride and chlorine. Iodine is important for adrenal, ovarian, breast, pancreatic and all endocrine (hormone) gland functions, not just the thyroid. Iodine improves insulin response. I've had health benefits from using Lugol's and get protection from any radioactive iodine releases the nuker's unleash. Fuku is still producing radioactive iodine. Hanford has had radioactive iodine releases that they don't tell anyone about until it's too late.

Getting to be quite a lengthy blog of people looking for expert advice and trying Iodine therapy.  Gaby has good info.
I've cleaned up the dosing thing a bit to simplify it.

LUGOL’S Dosing using 12% (if using 5%, double)
Normal weight person, no sickness: 5 drops per day.
Normal weight person, sick: 7 to 10 drops  divided into 2 doses
If infection or virus attack, 7 to 10 drops 2X per day
Overweight person, not sick, 7 to 10 drops per day
Overweight person, sick 15 to 20 drops per day in divided dose
Overweight person, infection or virus attack, 7 to 10 drops 3X per day

200 mg of B2 (riboflavin) per day. Can be taken in two doses with your lugols.
1000 mg of B3 (niacinamide) taken in two doses with lugols.
200mcg selenium (not more!) ONCE a day. with morning dose
3 to 10 grams of vitamin C - divide into two doses taken an hour after lugols.
Sea salt ¼ to 1/2 tsp in a glass of water 2 X per day.
500 mg of magnesium - glycinate is excellent - taken at night.

Eat a low carb, no gluten or dairy diet; plenty of good fats; and take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement.

I'm a big 'ol horse and dosed a couple extra drops that my body wanted.  I had already started detoxing away from breads because of the bromine but I still had runny nose and a couple red spots on the skin during detox.  Thick skin on the elbows getting much better over time.  Don't mistake detox symptoms for a problem with Iodine.  Go slow and you won't notice the detox effects as much.  Ten months have gone by and so have some health problems.  Healthy skin is the most noticeable improvement.  Less brain fog and better mood and attitude.  More energy and endurance, thought I was just getting old but now I think I was just too toxic and didn't know the difference.  Amazed the dentist how fast I healed after dental surgery.  I plan to continue with Iodine supplementation because those high rad days don't hit me so hard now.

I can try to minimize exposure to the toxins.  No more fish means we weren't getting an important trace mineral.  Iodine deficiency becomes a problem.

Doctors are not really interested in diet as a rule; they sell pills.  The Lugol's 5% is liquid, measured by eyedropper for dosage.  We are taking 16 drops a day; about 100mg.  I do mine in 4 doses, wife in 2 doses.  More than a suggested:

One drop of the 5% equals 6.25 mg iodine

8 drops of 5% Lugol's is approximately 50mg

The 100mg dose is closer to a protective dose from radiation protection KI pills but the Lugol's solution is a much better balanced mixture of the iodine and iodide.  The Japanese were somewhat protected with daily 14mg doses keeping their glands full of iodine.  Americans have no such protection especially the Midwest with no iodine trace minerals.  Now I might think that the medical profession has no interest in a healthy person.  They make money selling their own potions for what ails you.  Prevention or treatment, what's the right choice?  They tell me exercise and don't smoke.  They know about toxins but they won't tell you to stay out of traffic smog or don't drink the fluoridated water.  You understand how important probiotics are to a healthy gut, Doctors don't know much about diet, and we're just beginning to understand which biotics are pro and what are bad.  I will say in our personal experience that the iodine helps control the bad biotics and left the good ones to flourish. You wouldn't bother telling your doctor about your fermented dinner and I won't bother them with my dietary habits.   Take care of yourself.

Wish there were more foods (other than those derived from the ocean, cows and turkey whoch arehigher upin the food chain - bio-accumulation/magnification) that are high in iodine. It's a short list.

After many years, I just ate two relatively small portions of Atlantic Salmon. It's very expensive and not as fresh as I'd prefer, but, wow, I really miss Salmon.

Yeah it would be nice to get all the iodine you need from good food sources.  

I miss salmon too.  Missing out on the omega3 fats.   I had given up on lobster and shrimp after the BP Gulf disaster and turned to salmon; then 3-11 stopped that feast.  I think of how important the foods we eat are to our health and the poor food choices left to us by big corporate, uh let's just say - mistakes.  The cesium ruins the milk from grass fed cows right as strontium, a calcium mimic, comes along to settle in calcium depleted bones.  When will we get Average Becquerels per serving added to food labels?

"FDA: The Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) is set at 150 mcg per day for men and women with a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) of 1,100 mcg per day. This amount would be greatly exceeded by those using even modest amounts of iodized salt.

TRADITIONAL DIETS: Iodine levels in traditional diets varied widely. Weston Price reports 131-175 mcg for the Inuit (about the level of the DRI) and 25-34 mcg for Canadian Indians (considered very low, although they did not exhibit thyroid problems). ABRAHAM/BROWNSTEIN RECOMMENDATIONS: Abraham and Brownstein argue that the iodine requirement is 1,500 mcg per day (1.5 mg), which is difficult to achieve without using a species of seaweed high in iodine, iodized salt or supplementation. They believe that because of widespread bromide and fluoride toxicity, most people today actually require between 5 and 50 mg per day, amounts only possible with supplementation, which should only be taken under the supervision of a physician to monitor iodine status.

Commercial Vegetable Oils and the Thyroid Gland
Although Dr. Weston Price found healthy populations groups that consumed fairly low levels of iodine, studies indicate that in modern times, most people do best at the upper end of the scale, taking in around 1,000 mcg per day. Often overlooked in this discussion are the many factors in the modern diet that depress thyroid function and increase our need for iodine—not only exposure to halogens like fluroide, chloride and bromide, but also deficiencies in vitamin A, vitamin B6, selenium and magnesium. Reduced exposure to halogens and abundant intake of these key nutrients probably reduces our requirements for iodine.

Another modern dietary factor that interferes with thyroid function is the consumption of omega-6 fatty acids from commercial vegetable oils—by some estimates these omega-6 fatty acids contribute 20 percent of calories in “civilized” diets. As pointed out by Stephen Guyenet in his Whole Health Source blog, omega-6 fatty acids may suppress thyroid signaling. He cites studies showing that corn oil greatly suppresses the liver’s response to T4 when compared to lard, safflower oil suppresses the liver’s response to T3 when compared to beef tallow, and linoleic acid suppresses the response of brown fat and the liver to T3. The liver is one of the main sites of thyroid hormone-responsive heat production. In fact, in the 1970s researchers were considering omega-6 lineleic acid as a treatment for hyperthyroidism.
Thus it is likely that those who avoid commercial vegetable oils and minimize omega-6 consumption, while emphasizing intake of nutrient-dense animal fats like butter and cod liver oil, would have iodine requirements much lower than 1,000 mcg per day, and would be able to meet their iodine requirements with a diet of whole foods, especially one containing sea food.

Ten Signs You Have An Underactive Thyroid

A medical doctor will tell you that hypothyroidism is a life-long condition that must be treated medically. What a medical doctor won’t tell you is that thyroid disease is Iodine Deficiency Disease. You can come to that conclusion on your own, based on over 300 symptoms that identify an iodine deficiency.

High rates of thyroid disease and thyroid cancer show us that we have to take extra measures to ensure that our bodies are getting enough iodine, which means that we need to be aware of  balancing supplementation along with detoxification.

If you are living near or downwind of an operating nuke plant you should know that amongst other radionuclides, radio-iodine is released when the reactor is opened for refueling.  Radio-iodine has been detected in recent unidentified releases.  Radio-iodine will be readily absorbed if the thyroid is deficient in iodine.  In today's toxic environment getting enough iodine is crucial to good health.

Three years of Iodine supplements.  We've cut back the dosage to 12 drops of Lugol's 5% once a day over the last year, that's about 75mg/day.   I try to tell everyone I can how adding a little more Iodine can improve overall health.  I don't think it gets thru to most people.  While the medical profession ignores the many benefits of Iodine, we've been able to ignore the medical profession's costly treatments.  We're both over 60 and haven't been sick.  I'm the oldest of a large family and am the only one that hasn't gone grey or lost hair.  My wife could only remember one migraine that started last year but didn't last long.  She used to have weekly migraines putting her out for days at a time.  She did complain about her eyesight and she's getting new glasses because her eyesight has improved and her old glasses were overcorrecting.  Less brain fog, healthier skin, weight has dropped and stayed down, more energy to get thru a day; I think the Iodine has played a role in turning back the aging a dozen years.  She insists we should keep taking the Lugol's Solution.  You all should be getting a bit more Iodine.  

The real reason for this post was a technical paper I happened on that explained how Iodine is important to a cell membrane and in cell-cell signaling. Code has mentioned radiation's disruption of cell membranes and cell-cell signaling leading to a metabolic disease state resulting in cancer.  It seems Iodine has a long history and may be fundamental to life.
