WEBCAM April 2020
#1
Post webcam observations for April here.  Observations should start with a date and ‘jst’ time (Japan Standard Time) and camera(s).  Describe as best as possible what you see.  Contribute data such as weather conditions, work activities, TEPCO or local news reports, radiation readings, earthquake activity, or any information that documents events occurring at Daiichi.  Comments and analysis welcome.  Help keep an eye on TEPCO's disaster site.

Thanks Felibi. I took a couple grabs of the big cutter lining up over the tower, a slow motion show but what else ya gonna do confined to home.  I do a lot of my computer work remotely from home anyway and it's busier than ever.  Long waiting lines when banking, shopping, and some things still not in stock.  The economic impact is going to be huge.  The only good I notice is less traffic pollution.  They delayed the Tokyo Olympics till next year.  The radioactive contamination didn't stop 'em but a wee little virus did.

04-17  I noted a lot more spark and distortion activity when the little cutter works on the vent tube.

04-18  The little cutter removes another slice.

Notice in the last picture how the air column above the vent tower looks slightly discolored.  Wonder what's causing that?  The little cutter takes a few slices and the big cutter comes back in.

04-21 am on
04-22 0048 off
04-22 1711 on
missed when the little cutter came off.
04-23 1336 big cutter on.

04-30  Because of the Covid pandemic, the IOC had delayed the Tokyo Olympics till next year.  Now the IOC is considering canceling the Games altogether.  Yet another blow to Japan that wanted to showcase the recovery from Fuku's nuclear disaster.  As difficult as it is the work at Daiichi continues.  The vent tower is highly radioactive from Unit 1's meltdown and the aging structure was at risk of toppling over.  Removing this huge structure is a major engineering challenge.  Watching this long drawn out process on the Tepcams really showcases what Japan has had to do to deal with the meltdowns nine years ago.  Piece by piece Tepco is whittling down the vent tower.
