Post webcam observations for May here. Observations should start with a date and ‘jst’ time (Japan Standard Time) and camera(s). Describe as best as possible what you see. Contribute data such as weather conditions, work activities, TEPCO or local news reports, radiation readings, earthquake activity, or any information that documents events occurring at Daiichi. Comments and analysis welcome. Help keep an eye on TEPCO's disaster site.

05-04 There hasn't been any signs of life or work activity the past week on the tepcams, not even around r1 which usually has regular activity. The shift in cam1's positioning cuts off half of r3 now. The rain has washed the lens clean and the view at noon is clear.

TBS hasn't been available outside Japan for a long time now; Ustream remains off-line too. I hoped you could get 'Fukushima exposed' to post some of that video. The tepcams don't show much of the bay or much of the plant inland of the line of reactors. What little view the tepcams offer doesn't show fogging coming from the sea so the source must be inland of the line of reactors on the coast. Dumping radioactive material into the sea wouldn't result in steam unless it was boiling hot but the radioactive material all over the site would contribute to radioactive fog forming in high humidity. My guess would be that the CSFP area spewing radionuclides is probably a big source of the radioactive fog that forms inland.

We all woke up for a while back in 3-11 when the failing reactors started popping their lids. It has taken some time and effort to lull most everyone back to sleep. The lies and misdirection from the onset of the disaster have resulted in a cognitive dissonance. Atom bombs kill, be very afraid; but nuclear power is safe, be very happy. I kept watching the tepcams waiting for the smoke to clear and the distortions to stop so we could see the mess that would need to be cleaned up. Why were the webs so frequent, big, and they lasted longer than they do now? Distortions were color bands in the view that lasted minutes and hours are now quick blips that I can only catch reviewing the recordings. Spark rates that were two and three times what I find now. Its only lately that the rain runs down the screen like it should and the local fog doesn't constantly blur out the view. The common spent fuel pool area has been nudged further out of the tepcam views so we won't see the radioactive fog reflecting the site lights. Cleaning up and covering up, the cranes have started moving again.

A rainy month but only one night showed some webs on cam4; the night after a big fog was reported on the TBS-JNN cam. During the work break would be a good time to do some maintenance of the CSFP that might have produced a big radioactive fog cloud; fewer workers around to be impacted by foggy conditions. Pia posted
Forever Fog that has a good picture of tritium fog and describes beta burns from such a fog. I missed the post the first time around and just noticed it; thanks Pia. I've seen that band or layer of fog floating in front of the tepcams and that fogging usually comes with webs. I've wondered why webs, if they were so radioactive, didn't always produce more sparks. The beta radiation doesn't penetrate the cameras like gamma radiation does to produce sparks. The tepcams can help us detect beta with bands of fog and webs on the lens while the sparks and distortions show the gamma radiation.
Three hours of spark counts.

Maybe less smudge or smoke.

I watched this orange light flickering on the sea side of r2 for a little over an hour. Thought it was a boat light maybe. It didn't move; just stayed right on the edge where it first appeared. It started looking more like an orange flame flickering on the side of r2. When I looked at the recording closely it looks like a boat might have drifted in and out of view. One picture I grabbed looked like the light was on r2 though. Some six minutes after the orange mystery light was a little burst of three sparks in two minutes.

5-29 am, I watched a long rod being placed along the sea side of r1. The remote crane moved it into place, hung there for a half hour before the crane moved off without the rod. The remote crane picked up another tool and went around r1 pausing at different spots. That was a really long rod. The pics also show the smudges, smoke and/or clouds that look like something is still coming out of r2.

05-29 I saw a tank move thru cam4's view. I missed the second one but saw the identifying lights and found it in the recording. They are rather large but they move thru quickly. They appear to take them to the sea side of r4. Maybe water storage tanks that are past their prime. Markings look to be covered with a tarp as the ones before were. Eight pm seems to be the favorite time to move these things. I hope the tanks were completely empty and not dumped at sea. The recycled metal might get used to make brand new Olympic bleacher stands.

So those tanks could be the dry casks. That makes more sense than water tanks. They always look freshly painted and not worn. Thanks Pia.
