Post webcam observations for January here.  Observations should start with a date and ‘jst’ time (Japan Standard Time) and camera(s).  Describe as best as possible what you see.  Contribute data such as weather conditions, work activities, TEPCO or local news reports, radiation readings, earthquake activity, or any information that documents events occurring at Daiichi.  Comments and analysis welcome.  Help keep an eye on TEPCO's disaster site.

Olympics: 2020 torches to be made of recycled aluminum from Fukushima
January 1, 2019 (Mainichi Japan)
https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/201...sp/048000c
Quote:TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Recycled aluminum from temporary housing in Fukushima Prefecture, which was devastated by the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster, is planned to be used in the crafting of Tokyo 2020 Olympic torches, sources close to the matter revealed Monday.

The "flame of reconstruction" will first be displayed in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures, the three most affected by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami that devastated a large part of northeastern Japan.

If the nuclear disaster had not occurred the prefectures would have largely recovered by now.  Because of that nuclear disaster the 'flame of reconstruction' will have to be an eternal flame.
Simulations of radiation damage in spacecraft camera for ESA JUICE mission http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html...2049281041

Excerpt:

"The sensors of the cameras need to be protected from hazardous radiation levels caused by extremely high fluxes of very energetic electrons. A precise model of the camera was developed to be used for intense Monte Carlo simulations performed to optimize the shielding and to determine the radiation damage during the mission. Simulations included determination of the total ionizing and non-ionizing doses in the sensors and crucial electronic components. This paper presents both simulation methods and results."

Started watching at 2019 01 16    11 :09 JST or something
Smoky episode.
11 :15 Smoke again on Webcam 4, from left to right.  Doesn’t seem to be coming from visible CSFP but same level and further away ?
Who knows ?   Some screenshots :
11 :20 and one again !
Well and some activity on webcam 1 a bit later. A big thingy
Webcam 1 is motionless.

Mustn’t forget to ask what you guys and gals think of the often shaky webcam4 footage. Notice dit a while ago. Wind probably.

so webcam 1.    2019 01 16  Smoky event not on webcam 1. Activity though
01-16 am   That was a busy morning.  Thanks, Felibi, for capturing the smoke event.  The smoke started out real thick for a minute.  It paused for a couple minutes, then smoked again but not as thick.  The smoke thinned and gradually faded out.  It looked like a dark, dirty diesel smoke.  Good catch.  The shaking on cam4 in the wind has been bad for awhile.  It got real bad in one of the passing typhoon wind storms months back.  I think one of its mounts had came loose.  They must have tightened it up the last time they worked on cam4 because it seemed to noticeably improve for a bit.  Now it seems to be loosening up again when I'm watching it shake in the afternoon winds.  I started watching cam4 when the big thingy showed up.  Here's the start of the smoke and what looks to me like a small crane being dropped into r1.

01-14  17:24:00 to 17:26:00  Worker activity on r3 and the r3 lights come on.  Three cam1 sparks in the two minutes.

Really sad to see this.  '...the decontamination which the Japanese government hopes can be finished by the 2020 Olympics.'  They're trying to fool us.  They're destroying the marine environment.

01-19 Night work activity on R3.

[attachment=2371]

21:00  I noticed something that seemed odd, the three r3 lights changed colors several times in the half hour.  The color changes might have been something moving thru the red covered walkway on r3 or in front of it.

01-21  Drone sighting on cam4.
[attachment=2375]
[attachment=2376]

01-25 Cam4 spark.  With all the drone sightings I've been seeing I've been keeping a closer watch on cam4.  I thought this blink of light might be another drone but when I looked thru the recording there was no other light for 10 minutes before and after.  It's pretty bright compared to the lights I see from drones.

This grab shows the glare on the lens from a work light.  It's not a ufo or a ball of plasma.
[attachment=2378]
01-25 There was more work being done at r3.  The grabs below was when I first spotted the workers on r3.  They don't show the motion so I included a little video of when they were finishing up.  To see better, play the video in full-screen.  Most of the action was at the beginning of the vid and at the end.  I think the action shows up very well at night with the work lights reflecting on the white tyvek suits of the workers.

Finishing up the month with some daytime pics.

01-29 Caught a big part being moved.
[attachment=2383]

01-30  A puff of smoke; an hour later a crane moves into view.  You might see the load hanging from the remote crane over r1.  It was hanging there for a few hours.
